We can increase the total number of contact hours per week but we need to also change the teaching style/focus. What is our aim actually? To pass the examination? To be able to communicate? In what context? Business? Local? Different schools may need to focus on different aspects, i.e. level 1,2,3 and so on. More contact hours means the subject and the lesson must be made interesting, which requires the whole process re-engineered.

I'm looking forward to the additional period for English lesson as the syllabus is so wide covering the four language skills as well as the literature component. I'm sure many English teachers are struggling to cover the heavy content which need to be covered within an academic year. Therefore, i hope no one would complain about the move. In fact, that is the best way top improve the standard of English among pupils.

Although most of the people think that the main thing is that English should be taught more in classes per week, have they thought about the students? If they keep on changing the policy, students who are studying Science and Mathematics in English since Primary 1 or Secondary 1 may not adapt to the subjects in Malay. The scientific and mathematical terms are different. Have they ever thought about how the students cope? They are the ones who are studying!

The point is, Science and Maths are global subjects. To study them in Malay may not help when they proceed to college and university when everything is reverted back to English. They should either teach the students these subjects bilingually or continue to teach in English. They should let the students choose. The students are the ones who are learning them, not the teachers, the parents or the government.

As a future English teacher, i personally agree that the number of English class should be increased. I see this plan is a good move since most students really need more class to expose them to the language. I don't think it will affect our national language - BM because they are expose to it too much since young. They use BM almost everyday. Of course more well-trained teachers are needed in this field to run this move effectively.
