I taught this for my degree students. Well it couldn't be done in a day. Day 1 - started off teaching to write debatable and non-debatable statements. Lesson was better understood after some practice. Day 2 - taught them to write thesis statement and counter argument + refutation. Day 3 - told them to select a theme and write a debatable statement, thesis statement and counter argument + refutation. I must say I'm quite surprised to see their progress. For those whom missed the Day 2 class seems a bit off. However, teacher guidance is necessary. All practice done in pairs. Same pair for every lesson. Next lesson they will be writing a complete argumentative essay.

~Its not the most effective method i must say. You always can tailor it to your students' level. Good Luck

hello, I am interested in your passage.
You have a good idea about role play as action before draft. I have no idea about poor students.

i just want to share some ideas on how i introduce this argumentative writing to my students. for your information most of my students are average proficient. i have carried this in a 40-minutes lesson. i provide them with the list of adverbs of degree and manner. Students are asked to use the list in the discussion. Compulsory. Before hand i explain to them the use of the adverbs. Topic is given out and students are divided into 2 groups. Pro and Cons. They will discuss and present it to the class. In my double periods lesson we will have a mini debate before writing. I list all of the ideas presented in the single period and use it again for brainstorming before the writing process begins. All of the ideas are contributed by the students. They are very happy when their ideas are selected as one of the points in the essay. After all of these steps, then only i ask my student to work at their own pace. however, i am still having problem with the poor students who have 'allergy' to this language. i hope by sharing our experiences we can help one another in teaching english to our students. Have a wonderful day :)
