There are several public and private institutions of higher learning in Malaysia that offer TESL as a learning programme apart from taking the course of study via teacher training institutes nationwide.
The standard minimum requirements for pursuing a TESL degree is a good credit in SPM English (perferably B3 and above), and a Band 4 and above for MUET, apart from the compulsory credits for Bahasa Melayu (SPM) and Pengajian Am (STPM). You need to demonstrate good proficiency in the English language with passion for teaching.
We have listed them in the following list. We’ll be posting more details on the programme offered in each of the institutions from time to time and if you have information you would like to share, feel free to email us.

hello.
I just got 3A’s 2B+ 4B’s and 2C’s in my SPM 2009 (results taken this year).
I’m really interested in this TESL program.
I got :
A -Bahasa Inggeris
B+ -EST
3B -GCE-0 (quite bad)
are these qualified enough for this program??
I’m really scared since I didn’t do that well in SPM.
And I don’t want to end up not going anywhere. Can u possibly take this program just with a 3A in ur SPM??
you’re help is much appreciated.
please reply asap cause i’m going to fill my UPU form tomorrow night.
thank you.
SALAM,
I’m wondering,
is the twinning program (of public universities) with universities from overseas still present in Malysia?
I just got my result for SPM 09,
A+ for english
and GCE-0 1A
Well,my overall result is average,
I wanted to further studies in uk or new zealand so badly..
anybody knows about this?
TESL lecturers,anonymous kind-hearted person,
any comments?
well if u got ur bm agama/moral/as sunnah and sej a, u can apply mara scholarship…the qualifications are quite average.minimum b3 and a couple of a2’s (based on previous years)..if u want to give it a try u dun need to do twining programs u can just go there straight..or wait… maybe u have to do twining programs… but since ur bi is good, competing with the arts stream might be ok..i think. have a try. (but many sciences too)
Erm.. I’m afraid you got the wrong impression abt MARA scholarship.Right now, MARA is really low on budget so, it’s gonna be hard. You would be really gd and also one of the best if you’re selected to go overseas sponsored by MARA. Now with more than over 40 MRSMs ard Malaysia, the competition would be really tough. Moreover, MARA prefer to offer scholarship to students who would like to take up Engineering, Accounting and Medicines. And to qualify you would have to at least have 8As in your SPM.
assalamualaikum, hye,,i’m shahira from ampang,,i would like to further my studies in tesl..but i have no guide,,can anyone help me,?i have applied for matrix, but still, i’m not sure whether i could get the chance to go…if and only if my luck is not as good as i ever wished before, what should i do,what should i apply and,in which university is tesl available?so sory if my grammar is like crap,i’m quite nervous even in writting and sending emails,,
i need to know this A.S.A.P.. thank you..
hi shahira.. If u get to enter matrix, then u will have to acquire at least band 4 for your MUET. Other alternative? Apply for Maktab. You will do your foundation there and continue your degree there. You will get the chance to do twinning program in Maktab. But I’m sure u know this, TESL is the creme de la creme of many programs. Many people want to join this course so you gotta keep trying, and keep on praying. God knows what’s best for you.
ps: It’s not about whether ur English is superb or not, it’s about the passion in teaching the language.

im so nerveous now..dont know wht to prepare for the interview..
Salam Hakim,
Interview will not be that hard. Apart looking at your fluency and diction, interviewers will look at your maturity level and physical outlook (meaning how you dress). Questions will normally revolve around what you know about TESL and teaching profession. Normally, it is your promptness to answer and sincerity. Finding out about UiTM, TESL and teaching profession are your bonus point. Tq.

can someone especially those who have graduated from varsity wif major in TESL give any advice or charm..
that can increase my confident to pursue my study in TESL????
I’m no graduate from any university or anything, but back on those days, I do face such problems like yours. Self-assured is the main key, built the confidence within yourself first, trust in your ability. If you’re all wobbly inside, whatever method is useless. Perhaps, you should practice writing, and start reading more books/magz, for instance readers’ digesst. Its a good one,to actually enrich your vocab and to expose yourself to good sentence structures
Hello Shark,
It is good to know that you are very concern with your level of mastery. Rest assure that quality is not a destiny but rather a journey itself. One way to master your English is to get involve with teaching. Peculiar it might be but reality shows a mark improvement once you start teaching to others especially friends, neighbours, relatives and others. Studies have shown a distinct relationship between reading texts and writing performances. Hence, a big wieghtage towards reading in MUET. I would advise that you start keeping journal and force yourself to write anything even gibberish at least 10 minutes a day and later you will see the differences. Nothing is perfect at one go, that’s why we have process writing and proof readers. Tq
i am undergraduate tesl student and i found that even though we are going to teach in school really soon but frankly speaking our language still not that good. the students must individually make an effort about their language to perform well in their career. I keep thinking what is this happen..
Hello, I am currently in a Matriculation programme, I got an A+ for my BI last year and 2A for GCE-O. Im thinking of taking degree in TESL after I finish my Matriculation programme. Is it possible? If it is possible, where do you think is the best place to do my TESL? The MUET test is in another 2 months++, what Band do I have to get in order to qualify for TESL?
hi..is this programme avail. for part time study?
