Studying TESL in Malaysia

There are several public and private institutions of higher learning in Malaysia that offer TESL as a learning programme apart from taking the course of study via teacher training institutes nationwide.

The standard minimum requirements for pursuing a TESL degree is a good credit in SPM English (perferably B3 and above), and a Band 4 and above for MUET, apart from the compulsory credits for Bahasa Melayu (SPM) and Pengajian Am (STPM). You need to demonstrate good proficiency in the English language with passion for teaching.

We have listed them in the following list. We’ll be posting more details on the programme offered in each of the institutions from time to time and if you have information you would like to share, feel free to email us.

  7. Pritha says:

my sis wanna do TESL course n jz finish her SPM.
So do she need to do STPM n wat r the subjects tat eligible 4 tat course? thank u.

  8. Pritha, full degree programme in TESL normally requires a diploma or STPM entry (for public universities). She needs to have a good c.g.p.a for STPM (at least 2.5) and Band 4 and above for MUET.

She can also opt for a Diploma in TESL in private universities/colleges.

  9. min says:

    pritha

starting from semester july 08, bachelor of edu (tesl) uitm will only have one intake, which is july intake ONLY!!

you really need to have a good cgpa(3.5 and above) to be considered a place for this course. plus, your MUET result should also be band 4 or above. i really mean this as i have seen how hard it was for my juniors to get into this course last year. f.y.i, i am a tesl student here.

other than that, it also helps if you are from the uitm asasi tesl programme or any other ipta’s tesl diploma.

  10. min says:

    pritha,

other option for your sister is to join the institut perguruan. in order to get in, she has to apply for it first through an online application. she can choose for tesl and if she succeed, she will be called for an interview. but if i am not mistaken, the application for it is closed already.

other institutions which offer tesl are:
    UDM – tesl diploma
    UPSI- tesl degree
    UIA- english major (literature)
    unisel- tesl degree
    msu- tesl degree
    utm- tesl degree
    and more

    best of luck :D

  11. ZULFADZLI says:

chuah you can ask your sister 2 do asasi tesl at any public universities. it will take about a year. as long as she got SPM ENGLISH A1.

well, hello i was just wondering what kind of questions they will ask in the interview. i currently waiting for my spm result and i have been attending cambridge english classes. do you think those cambridge english certificate will be an advantage for me?

    • Nurul says:

hi Syaza, from my own experience, the interviewees didnt ask any serious questions like who’s the minister of education etc. But they asked for my personal details, why people call me nurul instead of other name, how can i apply to be a teacher because i’m so small…bla bla bla. basically, they want to see whether you are confident or not. but still depends on who interview you. hehe

as for the certificate, it might be an advantage because it shows you have more compared to other candidates. But still, it depends on the interviewees. Hope this help!

      • syza says:

dear nurul, thank you so much for your reply. it helps me alot :) but i got few more questions. well, i assume you are studying for tesl rite? where did you study because i just got my spm result and its not that impressive. just 3A3B2C1D and i got an A for my english apart with bm and math. so, do you think with my result i can apply for tesl? and what is your advice on that?

  28. aDaM says:

I’m not a TESL student, but I’m a Social Science student at a Teacher Training Institute, Ministry Of Education. Here, they provide Bachelor Degree in Education Programme for all courses and will be posted at all primary school. And I’m taking english as my minor. At Teacher Training Istitute, they also offer TESL, and TESOL which is English is the major subject. Those subject, offered at certain campus and they have collaboration with overseas universities. Such as University of Adelaide and University Of Macquaire Australia, and United Kingdom. First year and Final year at Teacher Training Institute Malaysia and Second and Third Year at the representative universities. As for me, I’m taking english as a minor, we’re studying on English Language For Undergraduates, Language Teaching Methodology and etc.

  29. Nurul says:

Hello everyone, i am a 3rd year student under TESL program. i joined this course right after my SPM. IT’s a 6-year-course which include 2years of foundation and 4years of degree. My program is a twinning program between Batu Lintang Teacher Trainee Institute in Kuching with UKM. I went for my foundation years and 2years of degree in Kuching and the final 2 years will be in UKM.I think there are few twinning program available because the Teacher trainee institutes are now able to produce their own degree certificates.

    • Tazieff says:

      Dear Nurul,
My sister had just finish her SPM and she is planning to pursue her studies in TESL. Just need some information regarding your application on your course that presently you are taking. Can you brief me on how to apply on the TESL course using UPU form. Would really appreciate your reply.

      Thanks,
      Tazieff

      • nurul says:

        hello tazieff,
I applied for this course thru UPU form together with other courses offered other than tesl. Actually, this course (tesl) was my 3choice in the form. Your sister can apply using this form and usually there are 2 options: for secondary school and primary school. and another option twinning program with overseas universities and local universities. I applied for twinning program with overseas university but i got the local twinning program with UKM. it’s not that bad though. However, the chance to get into the this program is really tough. you sister will 1st call for an interview. the result will be out around june/july.

    • israk69 says:

      dear nurul

I’m finish my spm last year and now waiting for the result. I’m very interested with tesl. do you know about program kembar tesl? may i know more? i’m waiting for your reply….

      • nurul says:

        hello israk,
i’m currently an undergraduate for TESL twinning program. I’m twinning with UKM. i’m not sure whether they still offer this twinning program anymore because now the teacher trainee colleges in malaysia are capable to produce their own degree certificate. You can check it with Bahagian Pendidikan Guru or KPM.

        • israk69 says:

how about the qualification to get TESL? how many A’s is needed? the interview? what we learn in the course?

          • nurul says:

i’m not sure with the qualification. But for sure you have to get at least a credit for BM. and an A for English subject. During the interview, i brought all certificates of my English even from my tuition centre. At least put some effort for that. The interview session was pretty messy. Because my interviewee asked me general questions regarding my family background. They even asked me why my parents gave ‘nurul’ as a name. You just have to look confident and crap a lot.haha They also were testing me when they questioned my capability to be a teacher since i’m only 5″ tall.haha just crap and look confident coz they just want to check on your ability to speak in English. In this course, you’ll basic things bout grammar, classroom management, preparing test papers, literature.

          • israk69 says:

TQ..so,what should i do to get this course?i had finish the UPU form and tesl is my first choice.may u help me in getting the twinning program?

  30. Amirul says:

Hello everyone, wish u guys have a good day. While i’m here, i would like to ask a normal typical question regarding TESL’s qualification. I just had my SPM last year and still waiting for the results. One day, when i went to a university expo, i was really shocked to find out that university only excepts students with matriculation certificate. Is that really what’s going on..? If true, then i’ll be a dead meat because i didn’t take the matrix form. Like you say NURUL, you had 2 years of foundation which i can find only at UIA n UTM. Another thing, i heard that this year will be no Diploma in TESL, it is straight foward to Bachelor for those who have maitix certificate that sux.

    • nurul says:

      Hello Amirul,
My foundation course were attached together with my degree course meaning it’s a 6-year-course altogether inclusive of foundation. I did my foundation in teacher trainees college. The KPM may have change the terms and conditions of tesl whereby all TESL teachers should have a degree in it. With the new curriculum starting next year and the abolishment of ppsmi, the government really want to produce quality and proficient English teachers. You can apply for TESL program using UPU form.

  31. kudabesi says:

allrite folks..for those interested to do TESL with MOE scholarship and a teaching carrier after graduate

pls apply the Kursus Perguruan Lepasan SPM (KPLSPM) for Ijazah Sarjana Muda TESL..NOW!

the course will be conducted for 5 n half years fully in Teacher Training Institute (IPGM) so pls expect to follow all d rules n regulation here.

before this, MOE have sent TESL student that have finish their foundation course to overseas and local university

due to the economic reason..all TESL course we be conducted LOCALLY

but, don’t worry about the quality..some Teacher Training Institute have trained english teacher way before our IPTA open their doors..

n my IPGM also conducting this course (TESL) have established relation with their overseas counterpart during the B.Ed Tesl overseas link programme

I wanted to further studies in uk or new zealand so badly..
    anybody knows about this?
    TESL lecturers,anonymous kind-hearted person,
    any comments?

    • minho+yoogeun says:

well if u got ur bm agama/moral/as sunnah and sej a, u can apply mara scholarship…the qualifications are quite average.minimum b3 and a couple of a2’s (based on previous years)..if u want to give it a try u dun need to do twining programs u can just go there straight..or wait… maybe u have to do twining programs… but since ur bi is good, competing with the arts stream might be ok..i think. have a try. (but many sciences too)
