Hot! The New KBSM Literature Component 2010

As some of you might have noted, the literature component for KBSM has been updated with a complete new list of reading materials. There is still a lack of input on the novels though as some teachers have mentioned they might not be included. We’ll wait and see. At the mean time, TESLMALAYSIA.com will start providing valuable materials for each of the literary texts starting this month. If you would like to contribute, feel free to contact us and we’ll be more than happy to acknowledge your contribution here.

  1. According to the letter by the ministry of education, iti is mentioned that teachers are to teach these poems and short stories together with the drama in Form 4:

    1. In the Midst of Hardship – Latiff Mohidin
    2. He Had Such Quiet Eyes – Bibsy Soenharjo
    3. QWERTYUIOP – Vivien Alcock
    4. The Fruitcake Special – Frank Berman
    5. Gulp and Gasp – John Townsend

    • Is it true that the last two poems in the new literature text, namely “Nature” and “Are you still playing your flute” are to be taught in Form 5? What about the drama “Gulp and Gasp”? Is that to be taught in Form 4 as well? Heard from some quarters that the drama will be replacing the novel in Form 5. Could you help me? Am a concerned teacher and mother.Thanks.

      • TESLMalaysia Admin

Yes, drama will most probably replace novels.

      • ya, its tue, my english teacher and other friends said so. but there are a few more drama gonna be publish next year for form 5, :)

      • Hello everyone!

For Form 5, students will be reading a novel (please refer to my previous post) and will be doing two poems i.e. Nature and Are You Still Playing Your Flute.

Gulp and Gasp should be taught in Form Four together with the two poems i.e. He Had Such Quiet Eyes and In The Midst Of Hardship as well as the two short stories – The Fruitcake Special and QWERTYUIOP.

This info is directly from the CDD and so far, they have not said that drama will replace the novel. They should all be taught in the respective forms.

As for the SPM 1119 paper, the format is still the same unless otherwise announced differently.

Hope this helps guys. Good luck!

    • the drama will be taught in form 4, form 5′s new novel will be introduced later

  2. Correct. They are already in the list above.

    • Another query. If the literature component for Forms 4 and 5 have changed, what about the rest of the English Language syllabus? Is the change just confined to the Literature component alone? Any idea whether there will be any change to the SPM English 1119 examination format, or will the format be the same, with only new literature texts replacing the old ones? THanks again!

      • TESLMalaysia Admin

Currently no confirmation on the changes to the English syllabus. But since PPSMI will be fully abolished in 2012, it is expected that some changes will be made to the English language syllabus in 1-2 years time.

The SPM English format is still the same unless some major announcement is made this year.

  10. Dear All,

I’ve co-wrtten a Literature Component workbook for Form 4 which is published by Pearson Longman. It is now available in the bookstores.

Teachers in secondary schools will soon obtain sample copies from their respective book sales rep.

The title is Light on Lit Form 4 (published price before discount RM7.50).

    • Hye…I’m a teacher in Malacca..been to the bookstores around the town, but can’t find your book yet…please let me know specifically where can i find the book..tq..

    • I read ‘Nature’ by H.D.Carberry, but am confused over the persona. The ref books that I have all say the persona is (quote)”We, the third-person point of view”. Shouldnt the persona be the poet and his fellow Jamaicans? And i thought “we” is the first-person point of view. Help, someone!

  11. I’ve just obtained a CD’s worth of materials (500 MB+)which were developed by the Curriculum Development Centre.

The state main trainers have been trained in early December and states should be beginning to have in-service courses very soon.

Melaka state will begin their training in early February.

As the MOE and state education departments are in a cost cutting measure, all materials have to be printed out by the school before coming for the course. It’s really very thick stuff!

    • i have to agree with u rodney. the modules are almost 300 pages altogether. My KJ is already having headaches just by looking at the modules.

in kelantan, the implementation of the new KOMSAS must take place in february, and all in house trainings must be conducted within this week or next week.

schools with easy access of LCD projectors wont face any problem on this…i wish i have my own LCD projector.

  12. may i know o details about drama gulp & gasp

  13. What does PPSMI stands for.
I am a student and would like to know…
Does it have something to do with syllabus

  14. hei~can i know what is the theme of the story’in the midst of hardship?”

    • man relationship with nature

      • nurullina ain lee

theme in ‘midst of hardship” :
        1. Love within the family – the parents (& other siblings, i suppose) went out in the flood to search for the albino buffalo that belongs to their son. Only caring & concerned parents will go through this situation to search for the child’s possession. Nowadays, busy parents do not really care for their kids’ lost possession as they are too busy working. That’s why we have so many social problems among teens. Where do teens go to pour their problems when only the four walls greet them every time they walk into the house after school).Link the poem to the present senario and perhaps we may see a lot of things around us.
        2. No matter how life is (good or bad), one must brave thru’ it with positive thinking and enjoying the little things that life still has in store for us.
(I read these extra themes somewhere in the net and I was thinking…..yeah….latiff’s poem sure has a deep meaning, friends)

  15. I’m a form 4 student who has been given an assignment to search for the themes and literary devices of the novel QWERTYUIOP, can anybody help me? Im not quite sure what literary devices mean. =(

  18. How about the new syllabus of English text book? Is it true the text book is now also changed? Or only the literary text?

  19. Hi there,

I would like to know about the theme for in the midst of hardship poem…. well every revision book has different theme for the poem so how are these students going to answer this question during exam??? how if the students are not good in english.

I would also like some ideas on hoe to teach students on poetic devices for in the midst of hardship?? any suggestions

  20. this is the malay version of in the midst of hardship that i’ve got from my mtl lecturer.

    Dalam Bencana
    Mereka pulang ke rumah
    waktu subuh hari
    dengan pakaian robek basah
    menghampiri api tungku
    lengan mereka penuh calar
    kaki mereka penuh luka
    tapi di kening mereka
    tidak kelihatan rasa kecewa

    Sehari semalaman
    mereka mengharungi banjir
    berendam antara bangkai ternakan
    dan serpihan kulit tumbuhan
    kerbau balar si buyung
    masih belum ditemui.

    Mereka dilahirkan dalam bencana
    tidak ada keluhan dan kutukan
    kini mereka berjenaka di dapur
    sambil menggulung rokok daun.

  21. i hv an assignment to do with my group, i’ve been tortured by them. huu. they asked to look for the meaning of the 3rd stanza, and get ready five comprehension question. im feeling so miserable right now. i dunno where can i get all this information and questions. our presentaion will be on the 30th of march. it’s in 1 and a half day for me to search all this things. can you help me? please! );

  22. Where does Black Beauty the graphic novel fit in?

  23. Hi! i need some sample questions to refer to. i’m teaching form 4.

  24. ellow…can somebody tell me what were the settings of the poem in the midst of hardship..please..

  25. What’s with the simplification of the syllabus? Students used to read Shakespeare, Frost, and Dickinson, and now they’re reading these obscure authors? If we don’t stretch and challenge their minds enough, if we’re going to submit to their and their parents’ gripes about the difficulty of some texts, then they’ll never receive their deserved improvement. Mediocrity breeds mediocrity.

And I heard that the form one students are reading a graphic novel? That’s appalling. Isn’t part of the wonder of literature such that it encourages students to picture scenes, situations, places, and characters with their own imagination? Shouldn’t we be encouraging that?

    • I agree with you that there is a definite absence in the cannons. And yes, literature is about imagination and relating to one’s life not necessarily via graphic novels.

That being said, the Form Five novels are actually written by Young Adult Literature authors who are also award-winning writers as well. They are brilliant (especially Step By Wicked Step) and I personally enjoyed each one of them.

Perhaps if you have really good students, then you could encourage them to take up the Literature in English paper for their SPM. You have more than enough “big guns” there to satisfy most palates.

I am not totally discounting your views though. I was also appalled in the beginning. But I gave them texts a try and this is where I stand now.

The Form One and Two texts are certainly simple (sometimes a little too simple). However, the challenge now is to make the best out of what we have. Decisions have been made and we as well as the students will have to be the guinea pigs yet again.

      Good luck!

  26. What are the titles of the novels that will be studied in Form 5?

  27. pls send d new syllabus of literature in english

  28. pls send it b4 2days

  29. Hai to all,

Is drama started teach in secondary school?

  30. Drama is definately taught in the present cycle of the new English literature.

Students can dramatize the two dramas (Rumpelsiltskin and Gulp & Gasp)

It may also be used to assess the students’oral standard through the PLBS (Forms 1-3) and the ULBS (Forms 4-5)
